The pivotal role of Greek shipping as a catalyst for supporting the global supply chain and prosperity, as well as safeguarding the safety and security of maritime operations, particularly in critical sea lanes, was highlighted by the Greek Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Mr. Christos Stylianides, during his keynote speech in New Delhi at the “Great Oceans Dialogue.
” The event was organized for the first time by India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in collaboration with the country’s Observer Research Foundation on November 18–19.
Mr. Stylianides also emphasized the need to strengthen international collaborations, both bilaterally with India and within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to address contemporary challenges related to decarbonization and digitalization, attracting young people to maritime professions, and enhancing the specialization and skills of seafarers.
During his stay in New Delhi, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy also met with the Indian Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal. The meeting confirmed the alignment of the two countries in tackling modern challenges facing the maritime industry and laid the groundwork for deepening their maritime relations on multiple levels, such as developing maritime trade networks, investing in marine and shipping infrastructure, and exploring new fuel technologies.
Finally, Mr. Stylianides reiterated the commitment of the Greek Prime Minister and government to fostering closer and multifaceted cooperation between Greece and India.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Minister also had the opportunity to meet with representatives of Indian public and private entities active in the broader maritime sector.
